Oceanic and atmospheric flows

Observations in the ocean and the atmosphere is “a giant laboratory for turbulence research”

Theodore von Kármán

Rotating tank

We operate a large rotating tank that can reproduce the effects of the earth's rotation in the lab. This has been used to model buoyant outflows to the coastal ocean.

Water tunnel

Our water tunnel can produce high Reynolds number turbulent atmospheric boundary layer flows.

Stratified Flume

Our density stratified flume can generate flows to mimic mixing processes in the ocean.
